Continuing Education Courses for Home Inspectors
We have been approved by the NY State Department of State to offer Six Two-Hour courses for Continuing Education credit. For Inspectors licensed in 2007, 24 hours of Instruction are required for License Renewal. For those licensed prior to 2007, six hours of continuing education are required. See the enclosed list for titles and brief descriptions. Below is the schedule of these courses and the corresponding tuition fees. Save money when you register for two or more courses at a time.

Home Inspection Licensing Continuing Education Courses Defined
The students will receive handouts with the outline of each course and a list of resources for further study and future reference.
1. Personal Safety and Preventive Care 2.0 hours
This course covers numerous materials and situations were inspectors could potentially be exposed to or need to handle while performing their work. Issues such as health risks due to presence of potentially dangerous gases, lead, asbestos, confined spaces and mold infestation will be discussed for quick identification and avoidance. The course also covers Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines and regulations as it applies to general conditions typically encountered during the inspection. Preventive measures complying with the OSHA recommendations will be presented to assure that the work is done in a safe manner.
2. Foundations of Foundations 2.0 hours
This course discusses the characteristics and properties of different soils and their behavior in residential construction and under different environmental conditions. Soil identification and their behavior under load for the selection of the proper foundation type will also be presented. Different foundation types such as spread footings, wall footing, piers, etc. will be reviewed. Materials used in the construction of conventional footings and special foundations will also be discussed. The course gets into the effect of moisture and water on different types of foundations. This includes surface runoff or groundwater effects. Inspection methods, identification and possible causes of defects, settlements, cracks and other types of damages will be reviewed and discussed.
3. WATER, Moisture, HUMIDITY and SUSPECTED Mold 2.0 hours
This course presents the possible causes of moisture and water penetration in the residential homes. The course also covers the effects of moisture and water on structures and the potential for mold growth which is considered to be a health problem/concern. Issues that will be discussed include: temperature, ventilation, insulation, leaks and other possible causes for entrapping moisture which could result in structural damage and mold growth.
4. Grading and Site Drainage 2.0 hours
This course outlines the importance of the site grading and the ground slopes in the immediate area surrounding the subject home and the general terrain. Close proximity to bodies of water as well as shore lines where tidal waters can be present will be discussed. The need for installation of underground drainage system and drywells within the property as well as the public roads to alleviate surface runoff and removal or discharge to the ground will be discussed.
This course presents various roof types and materials used in residential construction. Roof types such as gable; hip and shed roofs with high or low pitch are discussed. The advantages and disadvantages as well as any potential problems will be presented. The class will also cover changes made to the roof structures as part of any remodeling that could have adverse impact on the new roof system.
This course gives an overview of different design methods and materials used in home construction. Emphasis is put on conventional wood frame homes. The items of discussion include: interior and exterior load bearing walls, shear walls, connections, anchorage, tie-downs, beams, headers, posts, etc. Materials covered in the course include: wood, steel, light gage steel, concrete, recycled plastic lumber, composite and engineered lumber and flitch plate beams. The inspection process for identifying potential problem areas will be discussed.
